012 - Now I’ll give you something to believe

[ Kara looks quite pleased with herself today, and for good reason too. See, she's done some very basic calculations, and she's pretty happy with the answer. ]

Dean's questions got me wondering, so I looked up Earth's orbital frequencies and calendars. It turns out that the approximate equivalent of my birthday is September 22nd. That's about five months from now, if I have the order right.

As it also turns out, in Earth years I'll be turning 23. I guess Kryptonians live a lot longer than Terrans. Who knew?

[ Everyone probably knew, but Kara is just so smug. ]

Sometimes you don't want the same things you wanted a year before. Why is it so important to you anyway? Are you planning to get me something?

Of course not. But it wouldn't be much of a birthday without presents...

[ She's pretty okay with continuing conversation with him indefinitely too. Which is probably why she gives such an excited explanation. ]

While I was in London I saw these little wooden toys. I thought they were for kids but apparently they're puzzles. I didn't have time to work more than one of them out.

[Well judging by past experience, this is bound to be embarrassing. He walks into it anyway.

It's the kids thing that tips him off.]

What'd they look like, or do? Or did you find out what they were called?

I think the boxes said 'brain teasers'. They were just geometric shapes, but they came apart into little pieces that you had to fit together the right way. There were metal ones too. I was a little worried I was going to bend them by accident, though.

[ She comes from a society where even children's toys are high tech, this sort of puzzle is super cool to her. ]

[Well, that's not as bad as he was expecting; he was waiting to hear some kind of mensa puzzle or something. Slevin is not slouch in the intelligence department, he's been precocious and smart enough to cut since he was small, but Kara makes him look like a stonecold idiot.]

Huh. Yeah, that makes sense.

Is there anything you wouldn't be afraid of bending?

I don't know. If I got frustrated with the wooden ones I'd probably end up snapping them in half too.

[ Life is hard when you're this strong. Yup. Real hard. ]

Ignore what you already saw them made out of. Anything at all you would have to actually pay attention to dismantling?

Nothing I can think of off the top of my head. Or... there are kinds of crystals strong enough that I probably wouldn't be able to break them by accident.

Are you seriously about to say diamonds?

That's one kind, yes.

[ What part of bending steel by accident did you not understand? ]

Okay. Uh. Hit me with another couple kinds.

I think quartz would be strong enough. There's also topaz, orthoclase, corundum... those are the most common varieties, I think.

You can plan dates without dating.

Nouns don't necessarily equal verbs.
