012 - Now I’ll give you something to believe

[ Kara looks quite pleased with herself today, and for good reason too. See, she's done some very basic calculations, and she's pretty happy with the answer. ]

Dean's questions got me wondering, so I looked up Earth's orbital frequencies and calendars. It turns out that the approximate equivalent of my birthday is September 22nd. That's about five months from now, if I have the order right.

As it also turns out, in Earth years I'll be turning 23. I guess Kryptonians live a lot longer than Terrans. Who knew?

[ Everyone probably knew, but Kara is just so smug. ]

I haven't the slightest. Everything's been so different since I left Krypton, I don't even know where to start.

So what would you have wanted on Krypton?

My own aircar. Not that Mother would have ever let me drive it.

So, what, a car isn't good enough to want now that it doesn't hover?

There isn't a whole lot of use for ground cars either here or on Krypton.

So you're a practical over whimsy kind of girl, huh?

[notdreaming]

Sometimes. [ She can be pretty damn whimsical. ] It just seems silly to ask for a ground car if I can't do anything with it.

Okay, let's leave that one behind for now. What else?

Oh, I don't know. My birthday was a long way off, I didn't have a list.

Sure year round. There's always what didn't show up last time, right?

Sometimes you don't want the same things you wanted a year before. Why is it so important to you anyway? Are you planning to get me something?

You're the one who brought up birthdays. Are you hoping someone will?

Of course not. But it wouldn't be much of a birthday without presents...

[ She's pretty okay with continuing conversation with him indefinitely too. Which is probably why she gives such an excited explanation. ]

While I was in London I saw these little wooden toys. I thought they were for kids but apparently they're puzzles. I didn't have time to work more than one of them out.

[Well judging by past experience, this is bound to be embarrassing. He walks into it anyway.

It's the kids thing that tips him off.]

What'd they look like, or do? Or did you find out what they were called?

I think the boxes said 'brain teasers'. They were just geometric shapes, but they came apart into little pieces that you had to fit together the right way. There were metal ones too. I was a little worried I was going to bend them by accident, though.

[ She comes from a society where even children's toys are high tech, this sort of puzzle is super cool to her. ]

[Well, that's not as bad as he was expecting; he was waiting to hear some kind of mensa puzzle or something. Slevin is not slouch in the intelligence department, he's been precocious and smart enough to cut since he was small, but Kara makes him look like a stonecold idiot.]

Huh. Yeah, that makes sense.
