Character Information:
Name: Kara Zor-el, aka Supergirl
Canon: DC Comics
Canon Point: End of Supergirl (2011) #11
Age: 18
Reference: Here!

Setting:
Kara Zor-el was born and raised on a planet called Krypton, a scientific Utopia with a culture that values quantifiable evidence over emotion. Couples are brought together by genetic testing, the weather is manipulated by control towers, and the cities are governed by the Science Council. This is where Kara grew up, but we don’t get to see a whole lot of it. The planet’s core degraded and the planet itself eventually exploded, but not before two children could be sent in a last ditch effort to find safety. These children are the baby Kal-el and the teenaged Kara Zor-el, both of whom managed to find shelter on the planet Earth.

The Earth that Kara landed on is similar to our own in many ways. The countries and cultures are the same, the slang and the junk food and even some of the celebrities tend to match with ours. The main difference is that this is a world of superheroes.

For whatever reason, occassionally individuals develop strange powers. These powers range from the ability to run close to the speed of light to the ability to alter the very fabric of space and time. Some of these individuals are able to lead normal lives. Most of them end up having to make a choice: be a hero, or be a villain. This isn’t limited to humans or to Earth, but occurs on a universal scale across the galaxy.

Superheroes aren’t the only thing this world has that ours does not. Magic, aliens, time travel, just about anything imagineable is a very real possibility in the world of comics. If someone has written about it, it’s likely to make an appearance.

Kara’s Krypton as well as Kara’s Earth are part of a wider universe, and it is one of 52 that make up what is known as the Multiverse. The Multiverse has changed a lot over the years, transforming from one world to infinitely many then back down to 52. The last time the Multiverse was changed it compiled all of various changes and anomalies in time and smoothed them over, taking the 52 universes that already existed and ‘streamlining’ the timelines. Kara’s universe is known as New Earth, and it is a merger of three universes: Earth-0, Earth-13, and Earth-50. The different universes are primarily differentiated based on the history of their superheroes. Some have more, some have less, some lead different lives, some are willing to kill and some aren’t.

The people most important to Kara all died with Krypton, with the exception of her baby cousin Kal. Her mother and father were both members of the Science Guild and prominent figures in society on Krypton. Her uncle and her father were some of the greatest scientific minds on the planet. Both were aware thanks to their research that the core of the planet was collapsing, and both had different ways of dealing with that knowledge. Her Uncle Jor-el tried and failed to convince the Council that there was any danger, and he had to resort to sending his baby son away in a prototype rocket. Zor-el planned from the beginning to escape the planet, and rather than try to convince the Council that his brother was right he set about making preparations to send Kara away to Earth.

On Earth there are four people that have any significance to her whatsoever. The first that she met was Kal, who was raised on Earth from childhood and had no memories of Krypton. She doesn’t believe that he could really be her baby cousin, and so she doesn’t trust him.

The second is Kon-el, an Abomination of the house of El, a clone. Years ago on Krypton clones were developed first for medical and scientific reasons, then eventually mass produced to essentially be slaves. Over time the clones suffered a critical decay in their genetic makeup that turned them violent and insane. This sparked a war that lasted until every last clone was killed. Only a few days after the end of the war, the city of Kandor was stolen and put into stasis by an alien Collector of Worlds. The incident is vivid in the memory of Krypton and the reason that cloning is illegal. Kon-el represents for Kara little more than an egregious sin that has to be rectefied before it kills them all.

The last two are the only friends Kara has on Earth: Siobhan and Tommy Smythe. Siobhan has a magcal ability to speak any language after hearing it once, and apart from Kal and Kon is the only person on Earth that Kara can actually speak to. The girl and her brother are from Dublin, come to America in an attempt to escape their father, the Black Banshee. Both have been incredibly supportive and understanding of Kara, lending her clothes and space and even teaching her to speak English.

Personality:
When we are first introduced to Kara, what we see is a young girl who is lost and afraid. Despite all of the confusion and pain, her first instinct is to fight back. She may not have gotten far in her combat training back on Krypton but Kara is certainly a fighter in spirit. Part of the reason she has such a difficult time of it when she first arrives on Earth is her willingness to fight back in time of trouble. She is unable to communicate clearly, and in trying to defend herself she only draws more attention, which escalates until she is public enemy number one.

You could call Kara violent, but you could also call her passionate. She cares deeply for her family, even the extended portion that her father refuses to speak to. This explains why, when already vulnerable from her crash onto a strange planet far from home, she reacts to seeing her family's crest on a stranger with anger.

Even under the dangerous circumstances she finds herself in when she first lands, Kara doesn't want to hurt people. It's only when that stranger claims to be her family she reacts with violence. He must be lying, which means that he must have something to do with her presence on Earth, which means he must have done something to her family. And when people she cares about are at risk Kara doesn't pull her punches. When she’s been hurt, she can be a touch vindictive, but she does not actively seek revenge.

She can be very stubborn and something of a loner. Once she sets her mind to something she is very difficult to convince otherwise. She likes to find answers for herself and is not overly trusting of others. But she isn't stupid, either. She can tell when more violence is only going to make things worse, she is a decent judge of character, and she can tell that someone who attacked her once but decided to save her life later is not her enemy. Even with all that information, making the 'right' decision can still be difficult, but for someone who quite suddenly found herself unable to communicate she does pretty well.

The people that she does attach herself to Kara will defend viciously. She throws herself into battle without thought in order to defend a girl who she's only known a few hours. Siobhan was the second person on Earth to try to defend Kara, and although it isn't enough to instantly win her trust it does gain some measure of loyalty. When shown kindness Kara is readily willing to make new friends and show them kindness in return. When she does make friends she stands by them no matter what. Kara's loyalty is fierce and it is allotted to everyone that she cares about.

For a girl who has been afraid almost constantly since the moment she crashed, Kara is incredibly brave. She experiments with her new powers in dangerous ways knowing that it might kill her, but determined to find the answers she's looking for. She never hesitates to start a fight when it's what she thinks is right.

When it comes to boys Kara is sadly clueless. This is somewhat cultural, as there is a tradition on Krypton of being paired based on genetic tests, and it's somewhat her inability to communicate well enough to flirt. Although she shows interest in Tom and he shows interest in her, their relationship is very tame and doesn't involve much in the way of meaningful glances or touches.

When brought to Keeliai Kara would react similarly to how she reacted to arriving on Earth. She would be frightened and confused, of course, but upon realizing that the kedan were trying to help her she would not be likely to attack. Learning that she was in “In Between”, while a rather alarming, is more confusing than anything else. She would want to know what exactly it means. Most importantly, she would want to know how to get back, because although Earth has not been kind to her it’s where her only two friends in the whole universe are.

Abilities:
Kara has all of the abilities of a Kryptonian exposed to radiation from a yellow sun. These abilities are particularly amplified and difficult for her to control as a result of her pod’s orbit around Earth’s sun while she was in stasis. These powers include super strength, speed, and stamina, invulnerability, heat vision, x-ray vision, a sonic scream, a sort of internal heat source that is capable of building to an explosion, and a lack of the need to eat or breathe. These abilities will fade in the absence of a yellow sun.

More in-depth, Kara’s abilities work as follows:

It is unknown how much weight she is able to lift, but Kara is capable of stopping a subway train full of people being thrown at her and turns a subway car over on its side with ease. She is sometimes able to destroy stone walls with little more than the reverberating concussive force of her blows.

She does not use her speed often, but given some practice she is able to fly down a skylight and into her friends’ apartment without being seen.

Her stamina, while not suggesting that she never needs sleep, is great enough that she was able to fight men in mech suits, a satelite base full of armed guards and kryptonite, and four of the supposedly mythical Worldkillers before showing signs of exhaustion.

It has been shown in Action Comics that clothing made on Krypton tends to be bulletproof and shock absorbant, but based on the amount of skin left bare by Kara’s clothes it is clear that she is invulnerable to most attacks by her own right. Punches still hurt her and it is possible to draw blood after enough of a beating, but bullets or teeth or the like will bounce right off. She is so far only seen to be vulnerable to kryptonite and magic.

Heat vision is more or less what it sounds like. By concentrating Kara is able to shoot visible rays of energy hot enough to melt most metals.

With her x-ray vision Kara is able to ‘peel back the layers’ and see as close or as far through something as she wishes, provided it isn’t made of lead or anything with a similar or greater density. She can see her own veins, muscles, and bones alternately.

The source of her sonic scream is unclear, but Kara has shown an ability to scream with such intensity that it creates waves of tangible force. They have not shown to cause deafness or even to damage her surroundings to any great extent, but they are able to push back an opponent.

As solar energy builds within her, Kara is capable of calling on the energy to heat her body and produce light. When not controlled this energy will continue to build until it forces itself from her body in the form of a heat explosion.

It is unclear why, but since her arrival on Earth Kara has not felt hunger. It would appear that her metabolism is self-maintaining, possibly aided by solar radiation. In addition she does not need to breathe, either in space or under water.

Inventory: The only thing Kara will have on her is what she’s wearing: her graduation outfit, bearing her family’s symbol. This outfit is shown to be highly flexible and impervious to fire, bullets, and just about anything else you can think of. It is also implied that clothing on Krypton is designed to ‘learn’ to fit the person who wears it, suggesting that her outfit is One Size Fits All.

Suite:
She would be attracted to the architecture and design sense of the Fire Sector, as it’s somewhat reminiscent of designs on Krypton. One level would be plenty.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
Kara ran her hand over the brightly lit surface of the coffee table. It was cool to the touch, even though it seemed to burn like the firefalls she had once visited with her mother. The last time she had seen them was not on Krypton, but in the nightmare land Siobhan’s father had created. She found herself bitter not because of the attack that had ruined her evening, but because that memory had been so cruelly repurposed. She shook her head and closed her eyes, trying to remember the last time she had seen her mother for real.

Keeliai was not as loud as Earth, or as busy, or as vicious. Nobody had attacked her since she arrived, which was a nice change of pace. It didn’t compare to Krypton though. She didn’t think she would ever again feel like she was home. She didn’t much want to try either, but she couldn’t just stand around doing nothing.

She went out to see the turtle’s head. It was strange, less like anywhere on Krypton than anywhere else in Keeliai, but it was the only place that seemed to be quiet. She felt like she could breathe more freely there, and life didn’t seem quite so overwhelming. When she had nothing else to keep her busy she went there by foot, pretending to herself that she didn’t have any strange new abilities and life made sense. When she was there she was only on vacation in a strange new place, and not alone without a hope of ever returning to her old life.

She even smiled at the people she passed as she walked at an achingly normal pace. No powers, just Kara and the sky and the bizarre turtle she lived on now. She didn’t want a new life, but as she breathed in and forced her shoulders to relax she thought, maybe she would have one anyway.

Network:
[ The console isn’t quite like anything she’s ever used before, but the technology is close enough to what she’s used to on Krypton that after a bit of fiddling around she manages to get the video feed on and recording. She takes a deep breath and addresses the network. ]

I’m told that people are brought here from all over the place. If that’s true, and you can all understand me… [ She doesn’t really get how that works, but she sincerely hopes that it does. Otherwise, she’s on her own. Again. ]

I need to know. How many of you know the planet Krypton? And what do you know about it?

[ She almost adds a ‘please’, because if nobody here has answers for her then she won’t know anything until she returns home. If she returns home. But instead she clenches her jaw and turns off the feed. ]
