006 - It's always tea time

[ Kara has been baking almost non-stop since the flood started. Claire introduced her to the idea, and she rather likes it. Sugar has a positive effect on brain chemistry. It's comforting, and it makes you feel better when you're down.

So naturally, with everyone feeling down about the last flood, she is baking and delivering cookies en mass. Little bags of cookies tied with ribbon are being left at people's doors, in front of them in the dining hall, and (in duplicate) at the bedside of those injured in the infirmary. All have been left at super speed to ensure she gets as many cookies to as many people as quickly as possible, with no note or explanation. Enjoy! ]

Good afternoon, barge! [ She smiles brightly. She's in a fabulous mood. ] I just wanted to let everyone know that Dr. Banner has been teaching me first aid, and I'll be helping in the infirmary some times. I also have superhuman hearing, so if for any reason you need help or just first aid or anything at all really, just call my name and I'll come find you. I've been selfish, only thinking about my own needs and my own grief, and I want to help. And I don't need a lot of sleep, so I really don't mind.

You're welcome. [ She is ever so pleased, but only for a moment. ] Um, what for?

The cookies.

Oh! [ She laughs, embarrassed. ] I was so caught up with getting around to everyone I didn't realize anyone had noticed me.

More like I noticed your contrails.

[notdreaming]

I would have stopped to say hi, but I had a lot of cookies to deliver.

Any time. I owe you something nice for putting up with me all the time.

Not at all. I don't "put up with you".

[notdreaming]

You do, though. If there's only one thing I've learned about myself from floods here it's how truly childish I am sometimes. I'm sixteen years old, it's time I started thinking about people who aren't me.

Sixteen. [ So young!! ] You actually display rare maturity.

I mean... you woudln't guess that Chris is older than you, would you?

[notdreaming]

[ She flushes, delighted by the praise. ]

I assume that's because of cultural differences. I'm practically an adult by Kryptonian standards. I was going to graduate just a week after the planet exploded.

Likely, yes. You've a few more years before you're considered adult by ours.

[notdreaming]

I want my father to be proud, if I ever get to see him again. That means doing more than just sitting around feeling sorry for myself.

[ Something slips in Bruce's face, before it smooths over like it had never been there. ]

I'm sure he'll be proud of you.

[He smiles; this sort of cheerfulness is pretty welcome after how the past months have gone.] How good is your hearing, exactly?

I've gotten a lot better at filtering things out, but I can hear conversations happening on the other side of a planet if I want to. Now if I focus I can hear the heartbeat of anyone on this ship.

[And it's remarkable, but for him the powers are most remarkable because he knows what it's like to be ordinary.] Have you ever been unable to use your powers?

[notdreaming]

Only my entire life. [ She shrugs. ] Apparently it's an effect of the solar radiation from a yellow sun. Krypton orbited a red sun.

Interesting. I didn't know that was even possible. Are you more immune to radiation poisoning, then?

[notdreaming]

I don't know. There hasn't been much of a reason for me to find out. At least, I think my reaction to Kryptonite was fairly standard.

You're feelin' awfully chipper. [Not that it's a bad thing.]

[notdreaming]

I am! It's been a really good day, and I think I've gotten really good at baking.

[patheticvillain]

[She's reminding him of Kon, and it's simultaneously adorable and pretty weird.]

What if I need a baking partner, though? [This question is innocent and utterly unrelated to the mysterious cookies he found earlier.]

[ Apparently family resemblance even work with clone-nephews. ]

Well, that depends. If you need a baking partner to bring you baking supplies first, you should probably mention that when you call.

I can do that. But usually I have supplies. Except for really weird random shit. Like currently, I have three kinds of chocolate, but no pistachios.

What if I just need somebody who's really good at whisking?

[notdreaming]

Do you bake with pistachios? [ She has not heard of this food item. ]

Hmm. For whisking you may have to try somewhere else. I tend to get it everywhere.

Huh. You good at breaking eggs? Sifting flour? Making a huge mess?

[notdreaming]

Making a huge mess, I'm really good at that. Everything else I need a bit of practice on.

Do you? How fascinating! Can you hear everything on the ship?

[notdreaming]

Almost everything. There's something about the structure of the ship that stops me from hearing into people's rooms, so I don't have to worry about invading anyone's privacy.

Interesting! It might be some kind of silencing spell.

[notdreaming]

You mean like magic? It could be, I suppose.

[strangehistorian]

Well, that would be my first assumption. They're not very difficult spells. What do you think?

[notdreaming]

I had thought maybe the walls were made of lead, since I can't see through them. I don't know anything about magic, but I suppose my powers don't work against the barge itself.

[strangehistorian]

Why can't you see through lead?

[notdreaming]

It's too dense.

[strangehistorian]

Interesting! Are there other materials that have this property?

[notdreaming]

I haven't really looked, but I would assume anything denser than lead. Like Mercury, or Gold.

[strangehistorian]

I am tempted to ask Megamind what he saw in there!

[notdreaming]

Me too, but I'm not sure he wants to think about it. We never did figure out how to get him out of there on our own.

No. But he did get out! And that's what's important.

[notdreaming]

Of course! Though I still don't understand how he got in there in the first place.

[strangehistorian]

We could ask him that too! If he doesn't mind talking about it.

[notdreaming]

He is a scientist, isn't he? Maybe he would have some useful insight. [ And by 'useful' she means 'interesting'. ]

Yes! I'll ask next time I see him.
