[ Kara has been waffling over this decision for weeks. But she's been here six months now without an inmate, and she has to make herself useful somehow. How better than by sharing the rich knowledge of her most basic education? ]

If there's interest, I think I'd like to teach a class on basic scientific principles across the worlds. I've been doing some research, and it seems that for the most part the basics really are the same universally.

I can teach you about any subject matter that isn't considered specialty, but I know that what's considered 'basic' is probably different in each culture, so I was going to start with chemistry, biology and physics.

[ And now, having passed through the planned parts of her speech, Kara's anxiety begins to show. But mooooooom, what if they don't like me? ]

I know there's at least one person who's interested in learning.

There has to be someone else, doesn't there?

I'll be using a lot of books, I think.

Will any of them be on CD? I'm better listening than reading them.

I don't think so, but I can ask the Admiral to make you a copy? They would mostly be for reference anyway.

So, you're offering to teach things similar to that genetic trait stuff you were talking about before? Am I getting that right?

Yes, exactly! But hopefully in simpler terms than the programming of a dog.

How simple? Can you teach me something now?

Well, sure. The basis of most naturally forming life in the universe is the element carbon. Depending on its density it can take the form of graphite, which is soft enough that many cultures use it as a writing tool, or diamond, which is one of the hardest known naturally forming materials.

I would be interested if adults are eligible!

Of course! Anyone who wants to learn is invited! I may even get into some more advanced subjects if anyone wants to. Those would be more tricky, with differences between universes.
